Statement

On Statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CIS on Inadmissibility of discrimination and intolerance against Christians, Muslims and Members of Other Religions

delivered by Permanent Delegation of Armenia at the 1143rd Meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council

April 27, 2017

Mr. Chairman,

We would like to thank the Delegation of the Russian Delegation for drawing the attention of the Permanent Council to the Statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CIS on Inadmissibility of Discrimination and Intolerance against Christians, Muslims and Members of Other Religions.

We believe that this issue is highly relevant for the OSCE and needs further contextualizing and mainstreaming in the framework of our security Organization.

We need to address the issue of intolerance and discrimination against groups and their members under the international protection instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and UN Convention on Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. In this regard, particular emphasis should be put on religious groups whose very existence is threatened due to evolving security issues.

As an Organization dealing with crises and conflicts, the OSCE should keep high in its agenda the challenge of exploiting religion and invoking religious solidarity in conflict situations.

We also deem important to address the issue of promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms of religious groups, their cultural heritage, property rights, including issues of restitution building upon the Kiev Ministerial Council decision 3/13.

Thank you.
